Re: chavender
For me the chub offers such diverse fishing opportunities- I catch them freelining, float fishing, ledgering, fly fishing, lure angling...and the seasons don't seem to get in the way much either, Chevin is always my friend. I'm an admirer too of the lovely brassy look of the chub. Locally, on the Lodden, the Wey and the dimunitive Blackwater we get them up to 5-6lb. My best, just short of a Farnham Angling Society record was 7lb 2 oz.
A great way to catch chub is to fish a muddler minnow dry, but with the proximal leader undoped. Use a floating line. Let the muddler (I use a ruddy orange coloured one to resemble a bull head) is then twitched beneath the surface just as it floats over Mr Chub's haunt. I've had some fierce chub takes this way, when no other bait seems to be moving fish on a hot day. Its the annoyance factor I guess- not in my manor minnow!
Hope you like the artwork!

Re: chavender
Thanks for the tip, I'll try out some muddlers on the Thames this summer. Never caught on the fly before so should be a challenge!

I think we must all be brothers in arms. I cut my teeth fishing for Chub on the river ithon and eventually as I got older and was able to travel, the river Wye. A fish that will feed all the year round and give us some brilliant sport.
I was asked to write an articul on chub fishing for another forum but snce finding this forum I'll admit that I don't feel like I want to go back to the other one. Like Sinjin has already said, the chub is the ultimate Artful dodger of the fishing world and it requires a lot of stealth to catch one. Master that, find the right bait and they will provide you with hours of pleasure, like they have done for most of us.
