.......and when I showed that picture to Jim Gibbinson some 25 years ago he commented to me that it 'was a fantastic livebait'.

Whilst that dace was only an ounce under the record a few years later a much bigger fish of 1.06 was caught by the Late Stan King at Barton Court [before it became well known]. Stan drowned on the Thames in the swim I had been fishing all week catching a lot of barbel. I had gone to Southwold for a few days with the family. My friend Keith [Speers] had been trying to phone me all day but the reception on my mobile wasn't good. Keith had to identify the body. I was devastated and we drove around for a while to find an off licence in Lowestoft. Virtually a bottle of scotch was drunk that night.
A sad day I will never forget.
