Has anyone seen one of these?

Has anyone seen one of these?

Post by Swythyn Troutbeck »

I would like to pick the collective brains of this worthy community.

Has anyone eles seen one of these?

I confess that it is the only one I have seen but there must have been many, many more made, though I have never seen one come up for sale.

It is a wonderful little gem of an article which I simply cannot resist playing with. It has obviously been used but has been taken great care of, as it deserves, and is in lovely condition now that it has been restored from its former dull state with some good leather feed and polish.

There is no maker's name or any other form of identification and so I put it to the forum community to try to come up with some form of provenance. Does anyone know who might have made it and when? My guess would be anywhere from 1930 to 1950 but I could be very far out and I suspect that simiular kits may have been supplied to trade "names"...Ogden's perhaps?

Any ideas, chaps?

What a wonderful piece Sir! I ve never seen the like of it
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

I saw one on the dreaded auction site recently, but it was not nearly as nice as that. Guessing by the style of the decoration on the lid I'd say no newer than late 40's

These travel fly tying kits do come up fairly regularly at auction, and sometimes can fetch considerable prices! The example here was a very early one:
http://www.mullocksauctions.co.uk/lot-2 ... g_kit.html

Fetched £300 before commission so my records say!

I think they really took off when the "match the hatch" philosophy took a grip - enabling an angler to literally tie an imiation of the hatch then and there (or in his hotel/inn in the evening perhaps, ready for the morrow). I wonder if yours hasn't had some repair work done to the internal leaf - if not then its in pretty darn good nick! The only reason I ask is that the stitching looks too bright to be true (though its hard to tell from a photo).

Dating your is pretty hard - but I would hazard a guess at the 1940's if forced to. I love the slightly deco decorative embossing by the way! A lovely thing - and one I'm pretty covetous of!

Just a thought.

Are you sure it's designed for fly tying? It could be a Dr medical kit. Hairdresser (he's a nice boy) almost anything really?

It could be very useful for coarse anglers as well.
It is really nice :Thumb:
