Some more lures-

Post by MarkG »

A ABU SVANGSTA with a rubber body.
A COCKTAIL 18GR PARAVAN MADE IN NORWAY
A unknown plug, plastic I think, looks fairly old but not sure what make or age.
Pair of Dvon Minnows.
Any info, age, value etc on any of these would be appreciated. thanks.

Not much value I am afraid, If the ABU's were mint on a card that would make them more desirable, they would have been made during the 1970's I would have thought, judging from my catalogues of the time. The devons could have been made at any time. The plug bait looks to be a Lucky Strike- Creek Chub which are still made, in Ontario Canada in both wood and plastic.

I too think it's a Creek Chub Pikie, an American lure, they were also made in Toronto under licence by Allcock, Laight and Westwood, the North American arm of Allcocks....in fact it was here that Allcocks very first split caner rod was made.

This is the lure that took the UK record pike I believe...stood for some years now.

I have a 6 inch un-jointed Creek Chub Pikie. "Wood Pikie" it says on the box; Creek Chub wooden lures made in Sioux City, Iowa. Never seen water as it was a present from a friend from the USA some years ago - 60's or 70's! Sentimental value.

Creek Chub Bait Co. - PO Box 3410 - Sioux City - Iowa - 51102. According to my "Wood Pikie" box.

Lazy Ike Corp - purchased Creek Chub Co in 1978 and took all machinery to Iowa.

Ah!
I hadn't realised as it isn't mentioned here:

http://www.antiquefishinglures.com/creekchubhistory.htm

Some more info on the tie-up with Allcocks there, even though the name is mis-spelled.

I see it closed when Harry Heinzerling retired:

You wouldn't think one man retiring should put all those folk out of work.........

It is - I can now roughly date my lure! After 1978 & before the advent of plastic lures! Up to 35 years old - not yet an antique.

As a guide, if a plug mentions 'Wood' in it's name it is post-plastic (otherwise there would be no need to differentiate). Plastic lures have been around for a lot longer than most people realise. Over 100 years in the case of celluloid and three quarters of a century in the case of 'modern' plastics. Bonnie and Clyde were still causing mayhem in Missouri when Heddon launched their plastic River Runt Spook.:
