Repurposing some old Victorian pennies

Post by Tengisgol »

Some ‘new’ flat leger weights in three different sizes (two coins, three and four, glued with a little epoxy).

Then drilled out (minding Britannia and Queen Victoria’s head) finished with a link swivel.

I’m hoping they’ll help find an equally ancient chub!

Neat idea Phil.

Any you lose might give archaeologists of the future something to think about - early 21st century Briton sacrificing 150 year old coins in a water landscape. Very Celtic!

Check the dates... if there's a 1933 penny its worth a fortune apparently only 3 exist

Its also worth checking "Tony Clayton Coins" for values of Victorian pennies and indeed other UK coins:

If anyone wants any for ledger weights I can provide plenty of the lower grades. However, plenty of what you may consider throwaways, have value particularly:

Year F VF EF Unc
1895 2mm 20 90 300 800 18952mm: 2mm between P of PENNY and trident head
1897d 150 275 900 d: dot after O in ONE
1902lt 4 15 60 200 low tide
1918H 1 15 110 525 "H" below date
1918KN 8 80 600 2400 "KN" below date
1919H 1 15 200 700
1919KN 15 110 750 3000

I have spares of most of the H and KN series - if anyone wants to build an expensive ledger. :Hahaha: Sorry about the formatting - First value is for F Grade, second for VF and 3rd for EF always - so 1919KN Uncirculated £3000, 1897 dot between O and N in One - £150 F; £275 VF & £99 EF - no value for Unc - perhaps £5000 (hasn't been one found)

Here is the link to Tony's site.

I used to use these in the pre alarm days.Painted white(so you could find them in the dark) and balanced on the spool of a Mitchell 300.A bite was registered when they fell into an upturned Austin A35 hub cap screwed onto a bank stick.I have still got some in my tackle box.The "good old days"!

My wife collects £2 coins, I reckon they'd be better for the fast flowing Wye.... now where's that drill?
