Roach save the day!
Roach save the day!
I had the day off from work yesterday and was looking forward to a spot of chub and barbel fishing on the Dove. After several hours fruitlessly searching every bit of slack water I could find on a very flooded river, I retired to my "comfort blanket", the Macclesfield Canal.
I felt much better after catching a dozen pristine roach of the stamp shown in the photo!

Excellent !

A fine catch Davy - the Macclesfield canal contains some good fish.

Re: Roach save the day!
Thanks, chaps - they were all caught in the traditional style of 1960s Macc Canal veteran Albert Oldfield, who astounded the "light line and tiny hook" roach fishers of his day by using 4lb line and size 10-12 hooks and laying on with lumps of breadflake or crust, allowing the tow to bring the bait to rest against the bottom of the nearside shelf.
Mind you, bread is about the only bait you can use on the Macc these days without being plagued by signal crays!
